Now you are in South Africa once in your life. And then there is a sign on the road: “southernmost point of africa“, translated as “southernmost point of Africa”. And that means “Cape Agulhas”. What now?
Actually, there is not much to see. Actually, it is far too far from the road. Actually, there are many more things to look at. Actually, all good arguments are of no use: you just have to go. You have to, you have to! Where you are almost there … Almost there ….. Resistance is pointless.
The road to Agulhas is drawn. Apparently endless kilometers from the N 2 expressway through wheat fields and slightly hilly country. Asphalted is only the R 316, which leads from Caledon to Warenhuiskraans / Arniston and the R 319, coming from Swellendam 57 km to Agulhas. Several branch lines lead to Gansbaai and the De Hoop Nature Reserve.
All roads to the Cape lead over the village of Breederiver Valley, a middle-sized town and important traffic intersection of the two named rural roads. With its many shops and its central location in Overberg, Bredasdorp serves as a shopping city for many residents of the surrounding towns and farms. In addition, here is a centre of the wool industry and touristic interesting is the Shipwreck Museum in the Independent Street.
From Bredasdorp the road continues for about 24 km and you reach Struisbaai. At the entrance to the village there are a number of historic, white, thatched-roof fisherman’s houses: the Hotagterklip Cottages. You can book them through the Tourist Information. Struisbaai also has a picturesque harbour and a 14 km long, beautiful beach. More pictures and information about the place can be found here.
From Struisbaai it is only 6 km to Agulhas. The Cape is thus far from the tourist crowds and nearly 250 km southeast of Cape Town and can not offer much to see except a beautiful lighthouse, the shallow beach and a natural park with unique flora.
It is on the south coast of Africa usual collection of holiday homes in different styles colourful mixed with little green. Cape Agulhas is a particularly wind-capped cape and the environment looks rather bleak. The land prices are high, however, because many rich seek rest here in their villas.
